The Shields Centre

This multi award-winning Health and Community Facility is located in the Pollokshields Area of Glasgow and marked our second Project completed for hub West Scotland. The new, state of the art centre provides space for the following amenities for the local community:

  • Two GP Practices,
  • District Nursing Service,
  • Health Visitors Clinic,
  • Pollokshields Health Shop
  • Social Work,
  • Community Addiction Services
  • Health Improvement Teams

The centre also provides additional space in the form of “community consulting rooms” which offers local people access to additional services including primary care, mental health services and money advice.

The Building was designed as highly sustainable and was awarded an “Excellent” BREEAM Rating.  The overall annual carbon emissions are exceptionally low at 18kg/m2 and the building has an EPC rating of B+. The approximate energy use per m2 of floor area is 89 kWh/m2 which is, again very low, and The ENE01 score is 12 out of 15 which doubles the initial target of the design team of 6.

A locally based Community Artist was employed on the Project. His brief was to create artistic pieces and installations to reflect the diversity of the local community. His work included the design of the laser cut, CorTen Panels which created the building’s external feature “sails” and prevented members of the public from seeing into the consulting rooms.

The Project has also been awarded numerous accolades including a prestigious Royal Institute of Architects in Scotland Award (RIAS) Award in the Healthcare Category, a Building Better Healthcare Award for Primary Care Development and an NHS Facilities Award.
